Homemade Dog Treats
I love to create things. Most things I make these days are for my awesome Dogonnit customers, but I also love to create in the kitchen. I have some favorite recipes that I keep going back to, but I have to throw some new dishes into the mix on a regular basis, or I get bored. I love to try new recipes! When I’m reading the list of ingredients, I can almost taste the food before I’ve even cooked it.
One of my absolute favorite places to find great recipes is online at AllRecipes.com. You can browse or search for a recipe (you can even search by ingredients you want to use), and then when you find something that looks good, you can read reviews about it. You’ll quickly find out if the majority of cooks out there thought this was a great recipe, or if it needed some changes to bring it up to a 5-star dish. You just can’t go wrong following the advice of hundreds of avid cooks.
I’d like to share a recipe I use for homemade dog biscuits. I do buy treats for Sofie that are made with good natural ingredients from a brand I trust, but these homemade dog biscuits are really fun to make when you have the time.
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup mashed banana
1 tablespoon honey
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 egg white, lightly beaten, for brushing
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
2. Stir together the egg, peanut butter, banana, and honey in a medium bowl; blend thoroughly. Stir in the flour and wheat germ; mix well. Turn dough out onto a floured board and roll to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with a cookie cutter, place on prepared baking sheet, and brush tops with egg white.
3. Bake biscuits in preheated oven until dried and golden brown, about 30 minutes, depending on size. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
